Social Networking: A Tool for Self-Promotion?

A while ago a freind said to me “If you are not on Facebook, you fundamentally don’t even exist.” Honestly, I’m angling towards this opinion. Social network sites give you an awarenes into what your friends and colleagues are doing. It is nearly unachievable to keep in contact otherwise.

Still don’t just think of these websites as a way of keeping up to date about the lives of mates. Advertising yourself and promoting your product is another convenience of these sites as many real estate agents have seen. With the growth of internet services, advertising in the newspaper or having large billboards have nearly disappeared forever. The way to the future is now the internet. If you look around the internet, you will see lots of articles with hints on how to use, and promote yourself, on social networking sites.

Of course it’s much more difficult for older generations to get used to all the types of new websites, types of writing, commenting and all the related tasks. Our kids seem to know it somehow naturally, but for us, it might take a while to figure out how everything works. We keep going and try our hardest to master it all. I don’t think it’s just me that feels like that and lots of my fellow realtors are finding it just as difficult.

After working all day its not surprising we come home tired, so it’s hard to sum up the energy to find interesting things to discuss on blogs or make posts on social websites such as facebook and twitter. Our daily lives now surrounds just that sort of communication. Instead of sitting down in front of the TV, relaxation now means sitting in front of a computer and going on social networking sites. But does the public really cares about what we discuss? Do individuals, other than fellow realtors, actually read the articles we put up? Regrettably that is not a question any of us have the reply to?

One way of keeping up with what fellow realtors are working on for me, is to read their websites and read their articles. Are these articles of any interest to individuals not involved in the housing market, that I can’t answer. So now I don’t have to meet or talk to my co-workers often to know what is going on with their lives, I can read about it in their websites and posts. So I may not have spoken to someone for a long time, but I can genuinely say I have learnt alot about them, and this is because of social networking. That sure is fantastic!

As a realtor I deal Condominiums in Toronto, and I believe social networking to be one of the key ways of attracting clients. I hope this brief article was of any help for you!
